Managerial motivation and gender roles: a study of females and males in Hong Kong

The microstructural advantages found in the Chinese population may contribute to their favorable fracture risk. Future research is needed to elucidate the physiological or genetic basis of these findings. Despite the high education level and prospective vision women possess, it is uncommon to see women working on Hong Kong corporate boards and in senior management roles. Women account for only 11% of the total director pool of Hong Kong’s listed issuers, and 33% of senior management roles. The number of female workers participating in the labour force, which is 54% of the entire female population, lags behind many developed countries (67.6% in the US and 71% in the UK). In the hong kong girls legislative council, there are only 12 female members among the 70 elected members.

Indeed, our prior published analyses do indicate race‐menopause interactions for some variables.24 Longitudinal studies, however, would be needed to confirm these observations. Hong Kong women have long been accused of being materialistic and eyeing money, but there is a reason for it.

    • Under the so-called small-house policy formulated during the British colonial era, male indigenous villagers can seek to build houses on the land they own without paying a premium — generally more than HK$1 million ($128,100) — to the government.
    • A working mother has less leisure time to stay with their children and therefore cannot be aware of some developmental problems during the children’s growth.
    • Although the gender gap is still wide in the political sector, gradual improvement can be seen.
    • It is noticeable that more females are becoming economically active, decreasing the sex difference in labor force participation of Hong Kong.

Another Chinese value of “Don’t spread abroad the shame of the family” also leads to the absence of women’s disclosure on their experienced violence by a partner or other family members, in order to protect their family reputation. Concerning women’s leadership outside the governmental sector, the imbalanced sex ratios of the leading position in the enterprise world are even more serious than in government, with only one female in a chief executive role among 42 listed companies. In the judicial field, judges in the Court of Final Appeal are all male, while female judges only account for 15.2% in the High Court. Marriage in Hong Kong is becoming based on personal happiness and romantic satisfaction, as opposed to the traditional marriage based on duty and the expectation to stay with one’s spouse regardless of the situation. Women now have more of a say in who they wish to marry, and if the marriage does not work out according to plan, they are able to openly consider divorce.

The number of females receiving various types of assistance is in general more than that of males. A relatively higher proportion of female employed persons was engaged in clerical support workers and elementary occupations which offered relatively lower monthly employment earnings.

To deal with those negative effects, the boundary-spanning resources that help to meet the demand of each domain are helpful to improve overall working families. There are some policies that have been launched that work to ease the double burden from the “working mother”. For example, flexible working hours and supportive workplace culture can improve the family well-being of employees. Performers of authority roles are mostly men, with commentaries and voice-overs mainly heard in male voices as well. Women are chiefly depicted in domestic roles and gender-specific professions, for example, secretaries and nurses.

These villagers who were residing in the territory in 1898 would later be regarded as “indigenous” by law, and so would their descendants through the male line. However, like the majority of people in Hong Kong, they’re ethnic Chinese, sharing the same culture and language. Under the law, any male indigenous villager who is at least 18 years old and who has descended through the male line from a resident in 1898 of a recognized village in Hong Kong’s outer New Territories has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to apply.

Traditional marriage values are becoming less important and divorce has become more common and socially acceptable. However, it is important to note that in China, marriage is based on strong family ties and relationships, despite any lack of romance. Therefore, if one were to propose divorce, he or she would risk losing all contact with the family.

Differences in height and/or limb length could lead to acquisition of HR‐pQCT images at slightly different regions of interest. To explore the effect of differences in height on results, we assessed the effect of adjusting for age, weight, and height rather than age and BMI. Adjusting for age, weight, and height tended to attenuate racial differences in bone size and some trabecular parameters. Further, the magnitude of the racial differences was similar using either method. This study is the first to compare whether racial differences in bone microarchitecture are influenced by geography. Further, we compared trabecular morphology as well as mechanical competence with ITS and μFEA, respectively, in addition to standard HR‐pQCT indices. In summary, compared with white women, Chinese women in the US and HK have vBMD and microstructural advantages that led to higher or similar mechanical competence in pre‐ and postmenopausal women, respectively, despite smaller bone size.

Using a previously validated culturally modified Miner Sentence Completion Scale‐H , this study compares the motivation to manage a sample of 156 BBA and MBA students in Hong Kong. Results indicate no significant differences between the scores of males and females on the total MSCS‐H or its components, including assertiveness and competitiveness. Gender role differences are not supported by differences in managerial motivation of Hong Kong business students. In 2006, Tarana Burke coined the phrase “Me Too” as a way to help women who had survived sexual violence.
